Lagos Tricycle Owners to Protest NURTW Leadership Crisis on April 28

Lagos Tricycle Owners to Protest NURTW Leadership Crisis on April 28

Members of the Tricycle Owners and Operators Association (TOOAN) under the NURTW will hold a peaceful protest on Tuesday, April 28. They say years of mismanagement by past zonal leaders have pushed many operators to the brink. Operators trace the crisis back to decisions made under former chairs Kamoli Bakare and Agbabiaka Monsuru, which they blame for widening inequality, weak accountability, and a system that prioritises a few over the majority. Thousands of riders reportedly lost their livelihoods, while those who remained faced exploitation and rising costs that have also impacted everyday commuters across Lagos. Protesters are calling for transparency and a full investigation by anti-corruption agencies into union affairs. They demand accountability, fair leadership, and structural reforms to ensure the union serves all members. Despite deep frustration, the movement is committed to a peaceful demonstration to drive lasting change.

They always back whoever holds power, so neutrality seems unlikely here.

It's interesting that they highlight years of mismanagement, but I wonder if similar protests in the past led to concrete reforms.

Marching alone won't fix structural issues within TOOAN; they must engage directly with the zonal leaders and present clear reform proposals.

Operators could draft a detailed list of demands and share it publicly before the April 28 protest to build wider community support.
