Before Stocking Layers: Key Ventilation Checks for H-Type Poultry Houses
Before stocking birds in an enclosed, multi-tier layer house, farmers should plan ventilation alongside the cage layout. Share the proposed bird capacity, house dimensions, cage rows and tiers, as well as local temperature and humidity data, with the designer. Check whether fresh air will reach birds on the upper tiers and in the middle of long cage rows. Bigger fans alone may not solve uneven airflow. Air inlets, house sealing and the placement of fans must work together. Ask for fan performance at the intended operating pressure, not just fan diameter. The system should provide minimum ventilation during cooler periods and higher stages when heat rises. Cooling pads also work differently depending on humidity. Have backup power, alarms and an emergency ventilation plan in place before birds arrive. Which has been more difficult on your farm: uneven airflow or maintaining ventilation during power outages?
