NAFDAC DG Rejects Resignation Calls Over Fake Products, Cites Agency’s Record
NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye laughed when asked at a Lagos media briefing when she would resign over the circulation of fake and substandard products. She rejected the calls and said her record at the agency should speak for itself. Adeyeye said she returned to Nigeria after decades in the United States to serve the country, not to enrich herself. She also cited the liabilities, laboratory challenges and weak IT infrastructure she said she inherited when she assumed office in 2017. According to NAFDAC, it received 225 complaints about suspected counterfeit products in August. The agency said nationwide surveillance removed 7,210 fake, substandard and non-compliant products between May and July 2026, while products valued at more than ₦1.54 trillion have been seized or destroyed since 2023. The development has renewed debate over whether NAFDAC’s enforcement efforts are sufficient to curb counterfeit goods in Nigerian markets.
