Plant a Tree, Win ₦2.5M in Lagos State’s “Me and My Tree” Contest
Lagos State has launched “Me and My Tree,” a campaign offering free seedlings to residents. The person with the best-grown tree after one year will receive ₦2.5 million. This initiative aims to tackle rising urban temperatures and the heat island effect in a city of over 20 million people. Officials warn that rapid construction, traffic congestion and loss of green spaces have driven temperatures upward, affecting health, productivity and air quality. As part of its broader strategy, Lagos joined the UN Environment Programme’s “50 Cities at 50°C” campaign. Since 2009, the state has planted more than seven million trees with schools, communities and businesses. The ₦2.5 million prize competition runs for one year from the date of planting.
