Senate U-turn: Governors Allowed on Floor for State Police Debate
The Senate reversed an earlier ruling to admit governors and senior officials into the chamber during debate on the state police bill. Under normal rules, only senators may be on the floor. After an initial voice vote rejected the motion, invited governors and other executive members waited at the entrance. Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged colleagues to reconsider, noting the executive’s stake in the constitutional amendment. The Senate Leader then moved to suspend the rules, and the request was approved. Among those admitted were the Chief of Staff to the President, several state governors, attorneys-general and other key stakeholders.
