Workers’ Day Address: Tinubu Declares Insecurity and Poverty National Emergencies

President Bola Tinubu on Friday declared insecurity and poverty as national emergencies. He made the announcement at the Workers’ Day celebration at Eagle Square, Abuja. Tinubu warned that both crises threaten jobs, productivity and the nation’s stability. Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the President said there can be no meaningful economic growth where citizens fear for their lives or cannot feed their families. He stressed that insecurity disrupts farms, factories and markets. According to the SGF’s media aide, the administration is tackling these challenges with urgent and coordinated actions to restore safety and improve living standards.

Declaring emergencies alone won't fix deep economic problems or secure communities without clear policy changes and sustained funding.

A solid start would be prioritising community policing and social welfare programs while tracking measurable impact on poverty and crime rates.
