CAS Accepts Senegal’s Appeal Over Controversial AFCON Title Forfeiture

CAS Accepts Senegal’s Appeal Over Controversial AFCON Title Forfeiture

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has registered Senegal’s challenge to CAF’s decision that stripped them of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations crown. Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 in the original final but walked off in protest over a late penalty award. CAF later ruled the match forfeited and awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory. Senegal’s appeal, filed on March 25, 2026, seeks to overturn CAF’s ruling and restore the Teranga Lions as champions. The Senegalese government has also called for an independent inquiry into alleged corruption at CAF, condemning the decision as illegal and unjust.

It seems odd that CAF's on-field protest rules weren't clearer before the final, leaving room for such a high-stakes walk-off.

Both CAF and participating teams should collaborate on transparent protest protocols and clear penalty guidelines to prevent future disputes.
