Is Unemployment Pushing Young Nigerians Towards Online Fraud?
Nigeria’s unemployment crisis leaves many young people searching for work long after leaving school. With no stable income or clear path to independence, some begin to see online fraud, commonly called Yahoo, as a way out of poverty. Online fraud is illegal and causes real harm to its victims. It is not a solution to unemployment. Its growth, however, raises difficult questions about what happens when educated and willing young people feel shut out of legitimate economic opportunities. Reducing youth crime requires more than warnings against fraud. Nigeria needs decent jobs, practical skills training, affordable education, support for small businesses and stronger productive sectors such as agriculture, technology, construction and manufacturing. Young Nigerians have energy and ambition. They need an economy where honest work can provide a stable and dignified future.
