Before Marriage, Look Beyond Your Partner and Understand Their Family Dynamics
I would advise my children to look beyond love before marrying into a family. Marriage joins two people, but it can also bring together family values, expectations, conflicts and long-standing habits. No family is perfect. However, destructive patterns such as manipulation, financial dependency, controlling behaviour and unresolved disputes can place serious pressure on a marriage. A spouse may become an outsider blamed for changing someone their relatives still want to control. What matters is not only where your partner comes from, but what they have demonstrated. Can they set boundaries, make independent decisions and stand by you when family pressure arises? Someone from a difficult home can still build a healthy marriage, but they must recognise harmful patterns and be willing to address them. Love is important, but it cannot resolve every family conflict on its own. Choose a partner who is ready to protect the home you are building together, even when that requires difficult boundaries with relatives.
