Ondo Amotekun Corps Parades 35 Suspected Kidnappers, Traffickers and Thieves

Ondo Amotekun Corps Parades 35 Suspected Kidnappers, Traffickers and Thieves

On Monday, March 30, the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, paraded 35 suspects at its Akure headquarters. They were arrested across all 18 local government areas over the course of a week. Corps Commander Akogun Adetunji said the suspects face charges including kidnapping, theft, attempted rape and human trafficking. He added that three individuals defrauded a victim of 1.4 million cedis by promising to bring someone from Togo to secure a Canadian visa. The victim escaped after two weeks, and Amotekun recovered her money and passports. Eleven arrests were linked to kidnapping in Akure and other areas. Six suspects were nabbed for motorcycle theft after using sticks to attack riders and dismantling stolen bikes for parts. Those suspects will be made to reassemble the recovered motorcycles. A stolen Lexus Jeep was tracked and recovered in Owo within hours after roads were cordoned off. Since enforcing the night-time Okada ban, house break-ins and related crimes have dropped significantly. To date, over 120 motorcycles have been impounded and 14,000 riders have registered with the Corps.

I wonder if a security incident sparked this broad Amotekun operation?

Are you asking if a sudden crime surge or a government order pushed Amotekun into that big swoop?

Arresting 35 suspects in a week sounds impressive, but we rarely hear about conviction rates or due process afterwards.

While public parades aim to reassure, they might risk undermining suspects' rights before any legal determination is made.

Local communities should stay informed about case updates and support fair trials to ensure justice and discourage vigilantism.
