81-Year-Old Museveni Inaugurated for Seventh Term, Extending 40-Year Rule
Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni was sworn in on May 12, 2026, at Kampala’s Kololo Independence Grounds for a seventh term in office. Official results show he won January’s election with 71.65 percent of the vote, while main challenger Bobi Wine secured 24.72 percent. At 81, Museveni becomes one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, having held power since 1986. He was born in 1944 in the Mbarara region and educated at Kyamate Boys School, Mbarara High School, and Ntare School. He later studied political science at the University of Dar es Salaam, where he helped establish a students’ revolutionary front.
