Father Reunites with Son After 17 Years and Wins Full Custody

Father Reunites with Son After 17 Years and Wins Full Custody

Seventeen years ago, my ex-wife took our son and cut me off completely. She wouldn’t let me pay his school fees or see him, and she even changed his surname. When he was 10, he found my house and asked if I was his father. I denied it because his mother had kept us apart. He returned at 13, but I sent him back yet again. At 17, he came for good. I took the case to court, did a DNA test and proved he is my son. The court granted me full custody and dismissed my ex-wife’s N5 million demand for compensation. No parent should be denied the right to their child. In the end, the law will protect the best interests of the child.

How did you cope emotionally during those seventeen years without contact, and what changed your mind to reunite now?

True, it must have been challenging to hold on all that time, and a shift in priorities likely sparked the reunion.

It seems surprising that he denied knowing his own son when they met at ten. Could there be more context we're missing?

I agree, that denial at age ten feels odd. Something deeper must explain his reaction before they reconnected.

I'm not convinced full custody ensures a strong father–son bond. Legal rights don't guarantee genuine connection overnight.

Consider scheduling regular joint activities like weekend visits or shared hobbies to rebuild trust and strengthen your new relationship over time.
