Why Mandatory Bouillon Fortification Could Raise Maternal Health Risks in Nigeria
Mandatory fortification of seasoning cubes with iron, zinc, folic acid and vitamin B12 is being promoted as a way to reduce anaemia and birth defects. However, this approach could expose pregnant women to excessive sodium intake, especially where several cubes and added salt are used in daily cooking. A seasoning cube may contain up to 1,200mg of sodium, a substantial share of the World Health Organization’s 2,000mg daily limit. The article argues that high sodium consumption can worsen risks of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, while fortifying ultra-processed foods may encourage dependence on products that do not address food insecurity or poor dietary diversity. Nigeria should prioritise sodium limits, clear front-of-pack labels, affordable whole foods and stronger access to prenatal iron-folic acid and multiple micronutrient supplements. Expanding home gardening and supporting nutrient-rich staples could improve maternal and child nutrition without increasing cardiovascular risks.
