Ondo Plane Crash: Governor Says Pilot May Have Steered Aircraft Away From Homes
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa says the pilot of a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft may have prevented a larger tragedy by steering the aircraft away from Igbokoda community before it crashed into a nearby swamp. The governor visited the crash site in Ilaje Local Government Area and said residents reported that the aircraft changed direction while approaching the community. The crash occurred about 200 metres from residential buildings, according to his account. Recovery teams are working in difficult swampy terrain, with deep mud, water and thick vegetation slowing access to the wreckage. The state says it has deployed amphibious equipment to assist the operation. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash and have not confirmed the events that led to the aircraft going down. Recovery efforts and the search for clear answers for families of those on board are continuing.
