Sachet Alcohol Ban: Why Nigeria Must Protect Young People From Underage Drinking
Nigeria must take stronger action to protect children and adolescents from harmful alcohol use. NAFDAC’s policy restricting alcoholic drinks sold in sachets and small bottles below 200ml is a public-health measure aimed at reducing easy access and early exposure to alcohol. However, a ban alone will not solve the problem. NAFDAC, law-enforcement agencies and relevant regulators must enforce the policy consistently across manufacturers, distributors and retailers. Violations should attract sanctions, while corruption and selective enforcement must not be allowed to weaken the policy. Public education is equally important. Parents, schools, religious bodies, community leaders and health professionals should help young people understand the risks of alcohol abuse, including addiction, violence, road crashes, impaired judgement and poor academic performance. Manufacturers must also market responsibly and avoid practices that appeal to children. Nigeria should combine regulation with youth empowerment. Better access to education, skills training, sports, entrepreneurship and jobs can give young people healthier opportunities and a stronger sense of purpose. Protecting young Nigerians from early alcohol exposure is an investment in the country’s future.
