FG Denies Plans to Increase Electricity Tariffs for Any Service Band

The Federal Government says it has no plans to increase electricity tariffs for consumers in any service band connected to the national grid. Sadiq Wanka, Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure, said reports of an imminent tariff increase were incorrect. He clarified that the government’s policy only supports a gradual move towards cost-reflective pricing, which has so far been applied to Band A customers. He said subsidies for consumers in other bands will remain in place, particularly to protect low-income and vulnerable households. The government also plans to use the Power Consumer Assistance Fund to deliver targeted subsidies through electricity accounts or other verified means. Wanka said the policy is intended to improve transparency, protect vulnerable users and encourage investment in Nigeria’s power sector.
