Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc on Lagos Roads, Public Works Agency Responds

Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc on Lagos Roads, Public Works Agency Responds

Lagos motorists and commuters are facing worsening road conditions after persistent rainfall across the state. The Lagos State Public Works Corporation has appealed for patience, noting that continuous downpours make permanent repairs impossible until dry weather returns. The agency explained that this year’s unusually high rainfall is not unique to Lagos but that the city’s low-lying terrain intensifies damage. Saturated ground and blocked drainage have accelerated pothole formation and undermined asphalt surfaces. Maintenance teams remain on the ground, carrying out temporary fixes to keep roads passable and improve safety. Engineers are closely monitoring critical spots and responding to emergencies as they arise. Residents are urged to avoid dumping refuse in drains, which worsens flooding and road deterioration. Comprehensive reconstruction work will begin once weather conditions become favourable.

Has the agency outlined any interim measures for commuters, or are they still figuring out new detours themselves?

They keep asking us to be patient, but minor patchworks barely hold up under these downpours and potholes keep reappearing.

I understand the weather delays repairs, but shouldn't the agency have a better emergency plan than endless warnings and flooded potholes?

While waiting for dry weather, commuters should check local updates, use higher ground routes, and travel off-peak to avoid the worst spots.
