Former Nigeria Star Greg Etafia Named Goalkeeper Coach at Young Africans

Reports indicate that former Nigeria international Greg Etafia has been appointed goalkeeper coach of Tanzanian Premier League champions Young Africans. He joins head coach Manqoba Mngqithi’s newly formed technical team as they prepare for the 2026/27 season. Etafia began his coaching career in South Africa with Moroka Swallows in 2015, later serving as caretaker manager. He then took up similar roles at Cape Town All Stars, guiding them to safety and a Nedbank Cup run. He has since built his résumé with spells as goalkeeper coach at Baroka FC and TS Galaxy. As a player, Etafia spent 12 years at Moroka Swallows after stints with Lobi Stars and Plateau United, and he represented Nigeria at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Definitely his playing days equip him to stress real-world scenarios in training, sharpening keepers' decision-making under pressure.

It's interesting that Young Africans tapped Greg Etafia rather than promoting a coach from their own academy.

Etafia's name recognition might help, but will he adapt to Tanzanian league challenges as quickly as local coaches?

Young Africans could benefit if Etafia focuses on goalkeeper fitness drills and mentoring younger players from day one of preseason.
