Fatal Crashes in Edo and Taraba Claim 19 Lives
At least 19 people died in two separate road accidents in Edo and Taraba states over the past week. In Edo State, a truck carrying passengers and goods overturned near Egono community on the Auchi–Ewu–Benin road. Twelve people were killed and fourteen others injured after the driver attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre at high speed. The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed wrongful overtaking as the cause. One victim was buried immediately, and the rest were taken to St. Lazarus Hospital mortuary. In Taraba State’s Gashaka area, a commercial vehicle travelling from Bali to Serti collided head-on with an oncoming trailer. Seven people—including two women and two minors—died at the scene. A transport official noted the vehicle was often overloaded beyond its six-passenger capacity due to rising fuel costs and alleged extortion by security operatives. Rescuers took the victims to Bali General Hospital. These twin tragedies highlight persistent road safety challenges in Nigeria. Speeding, dangerous overtaking, poor vehicle maintenance, and overloading remain major risks. Safety experts are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, improved driver training, and better road infrastructure to prevent further loss of life.
