Nigerian AI Innovation Could Cut MRI Scan Times by Up to 90%
Mary-Brenda Akoda has presented GenScanAI, an artificial intelligence tool designed to reduce MRI scan times by up to 90% while maintaining or improving image quality. The innovation won the 2026 Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation. GenScanAI reconstructs MRI images faster and is designed to work with existing scanners. If clinically validated and adopted, it could help hospitals and diagnostic centres serve more patients, reduce waiting lists and speed up diagnosis without immediately purchasing additional MRI machines. Akoda showcased the technology to healthcare professionals, researchers, students and technology stakeholders in Lagos. The innovation is especially relevant in Nigeria, where limited MRI facilities and high costs continue to restrict access to specialised diagnostic services.
