How I Got Scammed by an Online Car Broker: My Honda Accord Nightmare

I need urgent legal and situational advice. I’m caught in a fraud case after listing my 2014 Honda Accord for sale on Facebook Marketplace at ₦12.5 million. An individual posed as an independent car broker and asked for commission to connect me with buyers. He sent two supposed buyers. The first lost interest; the second promised to return with a mechanic but never did. Meanwhile, a friend paid me directly and took the car. A few days later, the second buyer angrily called me. He said he’d paid the broker in full because the broker claimed he owned the car and that I was just holding the keys. I never authorised any third-party payment or transferred ownership to that broker. I’ve reported the case to the police, contacted the bank to freeze the account, and consulted my lawyer. The police have summoned me. What should be my next steps?

What warning signs did you notice before the broker asked for a commission to connect you with potential buyers?

Totally agree, unexpected commission demands before any real buyer contact is a clear warning sign.

Sometimes scammers use official-looking documents to gain trust, then vanish once payment is made.

I'm not sure the broker was independent; most legitimate agents don't demand fees before introducing buyers.

You fit gather all bank transfer proofs, WhatsApp screenshots, then report to EFCC or nearest police station without delay.
