Abia Government Accused of Looting and Selling Hotel Assets Amid Pending Lawsuit

Abia Government Accused of Looting and Selling Hotel Assets Amid Pending Lawsuit

The management of Abia Hotels Ltd has raised alarm over the alleged illegal sale of assets belonging to Investment Guarantee Ltd. These assets include generators, air conditioners, refrigerators, fans and irreplaceable personal documents. Despite a 25-year lease backed by a 99-year Certificate of Occupancy and a court injunction, the Abia State Government sealed and partly demolished the hotel in November 2025. Officials then blocked management from recovering movable property valued at over ₦600 million. According to the CEO of Investment Guarantee Ltd, a crowd looted equipment in full view of police and vigilante forces before the state advertised the premises for housing development. Management is appealing to eyewitnesses to share photos or videos that could support their case. They urge Governor Alex Otti to halt the asset sale, respect due process and private property rights, and warn the public against purchasing any part of the disputed property until the court rules.

What justification has the government given for selling those hotel assets before resolving the lawsuit?

It seems unusual that a government-backed lease would allow such unilateral asset disposals before lawsuit resolution.

I'm not convinced this is outright looting; maybe some items were sold under contractual interpretation, not to enrich anyone unlawfully.

The hotels should conduct an independent audit immediately, then secure legal injunctions on remaining assets to prevent further unauthorized disposals.
