Breast Cancer in Nigeria: Warning Signs and Why Early Detection Matters
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Nigerian women. The International Agency for Research on Cancer recorded 32,278 new cases in Nigeria in 2022. Many cases are detected late, when treatment can become more difficult. Warning signs may include a breast lump or thickening, changes in breast size or shape, skin or nipple changes, and unusual nipple discharge. Having no family history does not mean a person cannot develop breast cancer. Knowing your body and seeking medical attention promptly when something feels unusual can support earlier detection. What do you think stops more Nigerians from going for cancer screening: cost, limited access to care, low awareness, or fear?
