Doctor Explains Possible Cause of Jesús de Miguel’s Collapse, but Says Details Are Unconfirmed
After footballer Jesús de Miguel died in hospital, Spanish doctor Javier G. Rendo discussed a possible cause of his collapse during the Tenerife–Andorra match. He mentioned commotio cordis, a rare condition in which a blow to the chest can trigger a dangerous heart rhythm disturbance, but stressed that the cause of the incident has not been confirmed. Rendo said that if someone suffers cardiac arrest, CPR and defibrillation should begin as quickly as possible. He questioned whether evacuating the player from the pitch should have taken priority over starting emergency treatment there, while an ambulance was brought closer. He noted that every second matters in a cardiac emergency. The doctor’s comments were general medical analysis, not confirmation of what caused de Miguel’s collapse.
