Guinea Demands Retroactive Award of 1976 AFCON Trophy from CAF
I love history, and this twist of events is fascinating. The Guinean Football Federation has asked CAF to revisit the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations outcome and hand over the trophy they narrowly missed. In 1976, there was no single final. Instead, Morocco, Guinea, Nigeria, and Egypt played a round-robin. Guinea led Morocco 1-0 when the Moroccans briefly walked off in protest. They returned, forced a 1-1 draw, and claimed the title. Now Guinea argues that if CAF can retroactively review modern incidents, it should also correct the 1976 result. If CAF agrees, Guinea could become the official champions half a century later.
