Taming the Tongue: Let the Spirit Guide Your Words
“The tongue is a flame of fire,” James 3:6 reminds us. A tiny spark can ignite a forest, and a careless word can ruin lives. In our digital age, a single tweet can spread like wildfire and leave reputations in ashes. James admits no one can tame the tongue on their own (3:8), but the Holy Spirit provides self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). He can transform gossip into words of blessing and replace bitterness with grace. Gossip is saying behind someone’s back what you wouldn’t say to their face. Flattery is saying to their face what you wouldn’t say behind their back. Both can hurt and mislead. Let us join the Psalmist in praying: “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord” (Psalm 19:14).
