Labour Unions to Begin National Minimum Wage Talks in July
Organised labour has announced that the process to renegotiate the national minimum wage will start in July 2026. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) made the declaration during the 2026 May Day celebration in Abuja. NLC President Joe Ajaero warned against the delays that marred previous negotiations. He urged workers to stay united and demanded full payment of basic salaries from July until the new wage is agreed, to cushion the effects of rising living costs. TUC President Festus Osifo called for strengthened social dialogue platforms and reforms to ensure fairer industrial relations. He condemned breaches of labour laws by some employers and states that have not implemented the 2024 Minimum Wage Act, urging strict enforcement and accountability.
