Why It Now Costs Nigerians So Much to Travel Between Cities

Moving around Nigeria is becoming more expensive as fuel prices and operating costs push up transport fares on major routes. National Bureau of Statistics data put the average intercity bus fare at ₦9,607.41 in April 2026, up from ₦9,564.12 in March. Petrol averaged ₦1,288.54 per litre in March, while diesel cost about ₦1,648.08 per litre. Transporters are also dealing with rising costs for vehicle repairs, spare parts, insurance, labour and logistics. Bad roads and traffic delays add to fuel use and vehicle wear. The impact goes beyond bus passengers. Higher transport costs raise the cost of moving goods, visiting family, attending school and running delivery-dependent businesses, contributing to higher prices across the economy.
