Civil Society and Labour Unite to Tackle Soaring Energy Prices
Stakeholders from civil society, organised labour and the energy sector met in Jos to demand urgent action on Nigeria’s rising power and fuel costs. They warned that high energy prices are driving up transport fares, food inflation and business overheads. Experts said policy gaps, poor regulation and exchange rate volatility have crippled Nigeria’s ability to refine locally and stabilise prices. They described the situation as paradoxical in an oil-producing nation where citizens still pay premium rates for basic energy needs. The roundtable outlined reforms such as boosting domestic refining capacity, improving supply logistics and enforcing transparency in the petroleum value chain. Participants also urged targeted relief measures, stronger regulatory oversight and incentives for public transport and local refineries to protect incomes and curb poverty.
