Gas Tanker Blast on Lekki-Epe Expressway Plunges Lagos Communities into Darkness

Gas Tanker Blast on Lekki-Epe Expressway Plunges Lagos Communities into Darkness

A collision between a speeding tipper truck and a stationary gas tanker on the Lekki-Epe Expressway sparked a massive explosion in the early hours of Saturday, March 21. The blast destroyed property worth thousands of naira and claimed two lives when the drivers were burnt beyond recognition. The fire spread to three adjoining warehouses, a gym and a generator house before firefighters brought it under control. Authorities recovered three Sienna buses, a Toyota Corolla and a forklift from the burnt site. The gas tanker driver escaped unhurt. The Eko Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the blaze damaged key components on the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders. Critical conductors and overhead line equipment were affected, leaving Medallion Company, Sangotedo, Majek, Awoyaya, Eputu, Lakowe, Lasoro, Fidiso to Kolajo and the area around Elemoro Police Station without power. EKEDC apologised for the disruption and said its technical team is working around the clock to replace damaged parts and restore supply as quickly and safely as possible.
