Surveying and Geoinformatics Students Urge NANS to Resolve NUC-SURCON Accreditation Crisis
We are Surveying and Geoinformatics students and recent graduates from universities across Nigeria calling on NANS for urgent support. In May 2025, the National Universities Commission excluded the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) from accrediting our programmes. SURCON’s authority comes from an Act of the National Assembly, yet it has been sidelined while other professional bodies remain recognised. This dispute leaves current students and recent graduates unsure if their degrees will count towards professional registration. Without SURCON accreditation, they cannot advance to pupil surveyor status, sit professional exams, or practise despite meeting all academic requirements. We ask NANS to acknowledge this crisis, press NUC and SURCON into dialogue, engage the Federal Ministry of Education, and help spread awareness among affected students. We seek solidarity and action before another cohort faces the same uncertainty.
