American Ebola Patient Flown to Germany for Specialized Care
An American humanitarian worker infected with Ebola has arrived in Frankfurt for treatment, German health authorities confirmed. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the patient had been working in Bunia, Ituri Province in the DRC, the epicentre of the current outbreak. The DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak in mid-May, caused by the Bundibugyo strain for which no approved vaccine or specific therapy exists. More than 1,900 confirmed cases and over 700 deaths have been recorded so far. Germany’s health ministry has assured the public that the patient poses no risk to others. US authorities sought Germany’s help because of its proven Ebola treatment expertise and shorter transfer distance from the DRC. This transfer follows a recent case treated at Berlin’s Charité Hospital, where another American patient recovered after two weeks of care.
