John the Baptist’s Call to Repentance (Matthew 3:1-12)
In this passage, John the Baptist emerges in the wilderness of Judea. He preaches a clear message: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” He fulfils Isaiah’s prophecy by preparing the way for the Lord, dressed in camel’s hair and living on locusts and wild honey. Crowds from Jerusalem and all over the Jordan region come to him, confessing their sins and being baptized in the river. John warns religious leaders who come for baptism to produce genuine fruit. He points to someone greater on the horizon—one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire, separating wheat from chaff.
