World Cup Striker Elye Wahi Arrested Amid Match-Fixing Investigation
Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi was arrested by French police less than two weeks before the World Cup over suspected match-fixing. Authorities in Marseille say the 23-year-old was detained on May 29 after an inquiry into unusual betting patterns surrounding a yellow card he received for Nice against Metz on May 17. He was released following questioning. Prosecutors have opened investigations into organised fraud, sports corruption, handling of criminal proceeds and money laundering. The case began when the French league reported suspicious bets on Wahi’s booking. Wahi faces no formal charges and has since joined the Ivory Coast camp in the United States. He featured in the opening win over Ecuador and could play in their next Group E matches.
