Nigeria Weighs Retaliation After Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians in South Africa

Nigeria Weighs Retaliation After Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians in South Africa — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Nigeria is preparing to repatriate citizens facing xenophobic violence in South Africa. A crisis response unit has been set up within Nigerian consulates and the mission in Pretoria to organise documentation and safe return. Many Nigerians report harassment, property looting and intimidation at schools. The foreign minister emphasised that law-abiding business owners cannot be labelled illegal migrants and criticised South African authorities for failing to condemn these attacks firmly. In light of the growing crisis, the government is considering retaliatory measures pending approval from the legislature. Those evacuated will be supported by NEMA and other agencies to help them rebuild their lives on return. The dispute escalated online as South Africans targeted Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s social media pages, despite her not posting about the xenophobia issue.
