Botswana Pulls Out of 2028 AFCON Hosting Bid With South Africa and Zimbabwe

Botswana has withdrawn from its joint bid with South Africa and Zimbabwe to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations. Reports say the Botswana government declined to provide the financial guarantee needed for the bid, citing funding constraints and other national priorities. Botswana also missed the September 14, 2026 deadline for submitting the required documents. The withdrawal ends plans for matches to be shared between Gaborone and Francistown. South Africa and Zimbabwe will now continue the hosting bid as a two-country proposal, pending CAF's final decision.
