Embracing Mercy: A Reflection on the Fifth Beatitude
In Matthew 5:7, Jesus declares, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Mercy goes beyond forgiveness and yet falls short of love. It is rooted in justice and active at all times. Forgiveness responds to a wrong, but mercy extends help before and after the failure. Love is the source of mercy, while grace offers complete pardon and lasting healing. Mercy relieves our pain and protects the weak. God is both just and merciful. True mercy does not ignore sin but enables us to face it and seek forgiveness. The more we show mercy, the more we receive from God. As His followers, we become channels of His mercy, free from bitterness and ready to uplift others.
