Oyo Governor Appeals for Unity After Pupils and Teachers Abducted

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde described the recent abduction of 39 pupils and seven teachers in Oriire LGA as a moment of national distress that requires unity rather than political blame. He assured Nigerians that every available security resource is being deployed to secure the safe return of those held captive. Speaking during a peaceful protest by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and National Association of Nigerian Students, Makinde urged teachers, workers, students and residents to trust the ongoing rescue operations. He revealed that federal security operatives have been on the ground for weeks, pursuing leads and meeting with him multiple times a day. Stressing that the attackers are “not normal human beings,” the governor warned against actions that could embolden criminal elements. He promised that, by God’s grace, the children and their teachers will return safely and invited stakeholders to share ideas on strengthening the state’s long-term security framework.

Absolutely! Getting local chiefs and parents in a community meet go help us stand strong together.

Promising every security resource sounds good, but similar assurances in past incidents didn't always prevent danger.

Unity is important, but blaming politics away won't hold leaders to account for persistent security failures at community level.

Communities could organize neighbourhood watch with clear reporting channels and volunteer escorts to support safe school travel routes.
