From Classroom to Governor’s Mansion: Virginia Etiaba’s Trailblazing Journey
The debate over women in leadership has never been about ability but about memory. Virginia Etiaba, Nigeria’s first female state governor, proved that barriers can be broken. A dedicated educator, she taught across Kaduna, Abia, Rivers, and Anambra states for 35 years and founded Benneth Etiaba Memorial School in Nnewi. In 2006, she became deputy governor of Anambra and, after her boss’s impeachment, served as governor for 97 days, maintaining projects and upholding due process. Her landmark achievement was signing the Child Rights Act into law, protecting children from marriage, labour, and abuse and guaranteeing their access to education and healthcare. When the court restored her predecessor, she respectfully handed over power. A colon cancer survivor and Commander of the Order of the Niger, Etiaba remains a mentor to women and a champion of education. Her story is a powerful reminder that women’s accomplishments deserve lasting recognition.
