Buratai Calls for Renewed ECOWAS Unity on 51st Anniversary
Former Chief of Army Staff Tukur Yusuf Buratai has urged West African nations to renew their commitment to regional peace as ECOWAS marks its 51st anniversary. Speaking at the 2026 Voice of Nigeria Forum in Abuja, he described Nigeria as the “unshakable anchor” of ECOWAS. He highlighted Nigeria’s leadership in past peacekeeping operations, including ECOMOG missions in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and stabilization efforts in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. Buratai stressed that Nigeria’s stability is closely tied to its neighbours, calling for democracy and collective security to advance together. He warned that excluding Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger would weaken the bloc’s unity. He also called on ECOWAS to deepen collaboration with the African Union and praised Voice of Nigeria for its role in shaping African narratives on its 51st anniversary.
