SERAP and NGE Demand Urgent Action on Press Freedom and Security in Northern Nigeria

SERAP and NGE Demand Urgent Action on Press Freedom and Security in Northern Nigeria

As Nigeria marks World Press Freedom Day, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) have urged President Tinubu, state governors, and the FCT Minister to safeguard journalists and end the escalating insecurity across northern states including Benue, Borno, Plateau, Kwara, and Sokoto. Speaking at an event in Ikeja, the groups stressed that free, independent, and pluralistic media are essential for peace and democratic stability. They warned that unchecked killings, abductions, sexual violence, and forced displacement have shattered rural communities and eroded public trust. SERAP and NGE called on federal and state authorities to conduct prompt investigations, prosecute perpetrators and sponsors of violence, and provide effective remedies for victims. They also urged the National Assembly to hold a public hearing on attacks on journalists and invited UN and African human rights rapporteurs to undertake fact-finding missions.

I agree. Establishing shared safety protocols and routine briefings between authorities and news outlets would boost protection on the ground.

No be only press statements go secure journalists; real on-ground security measures are what truly matter.

State governments should set up dedicated protection units for reporters and regularly review safety protocols in conflict zones.
