South Africa’s long-awaited return to the World Cup began in nightmare fashion when Julián Quiñones struck after just nine minutes against co-hosts Mexico. A momentary lapse at the edge of the box let Quiñones drill a low shot through goalkeeper Ronwen Williams’ legs. That goal now ranks as the third-fastest ever conceded in a World Cup opener and the earliest since Germany’s Philipp Lahm scored in 2006. The early shock left Bafana Bafana chasing the game in front of a raucous Mexico City Stadium crowd. It also offered a stark contrast to the 2010 opener in Johannesburg, when South Africa earned a fighting 1-1 draw against the same opponent.
