Mental Health Experts Urge Nigerians to Reject Stigma and Seek Professional Support
Mental health experts have urged Nigerians experiencing emotional or psychological distress to seek professional support instead of suffering in silence or attributing every condition solely to spiritual causes. At a World Mental Health Day awareness programme in Lekki, Lagos, speakers said mental well-being should be treated alongside physical health. The event included a community walk, vital-sign checks and a Pilates session. The experts identified biological, psychological and social factors as possible contributors to mental health conditions. They also called for greater awareness of postpartum depression, the effects of substance use, and persistent behavioural changes that may require professional assessment. Families, employers and communities were urged to create supportive spaces where people can discuss mental health without shame or discrimination.
