Church Demanded Mum’s Tithe Booklet Before Burial – Daughter Speaks Out
When I found my mum’s church records today, memories came flooding back. My father had written to their congregation to inform them of my 36-year-old mum’s death and invite them to her burial. But they refused to officiate without seeing her original tithe booklet. He made multiple trips from the East to Gusau just to produce that booklet. A photocopy wasn’t enough. At 12 years old, I watched as the church barred us from the funeral and nobody checked on me or my 18-month-old sister. I only discovered her grave’s location last year. My mum poured herself into that church—prayer meetings, cleaning duties, everything. Yet the only reward she got for her faith was losing her life in a troubled marriage and facing cold rejection. It’s in the past now, but I can never fully trust any religion again.
