EFCC Witness: Buhari and Mustapha Should Face Charges Over $6.2m CBN Withdrawal

EFCC Witness: Buhari and Mustapha Should Face Charges Over $6.2m CBN Withdrawal

Jim Obazee is a special investigator appointed by President Tinubu in July 2023. He testified in the Federal Capital Territory High Court during Godwin Emefiele’s trial. He said former President Buhari and ex-SGF Boss Mustapha should have been charged with fraud over a $6.23m withdrawal from the CBN. Obazee told the court that the money, meant for foreign election observers in 2023, was taken fraudulently and handed to suspected criminals. He said only $856,500 was recovered from a CBN staff member, Bashirudeen Maishanu, who he believes should also face prosecution alongside Emefiele. The witness argued that more than ten people were involved and that Buhari, Mustapha and former board members were unjustly left out of the trial. Mustapha had earlier denied any authorisation by Buhari for releasing the funds. The case was adjourned to October 20, 2026 for final addresses. Emefiele’s defence plans a no-case submission.

How do you think prosecuting Buhari and Mustapha over that $6.23m withdrawal will affect public trust in anti-corruption efforts?

Exactly, pursuing Buhari and Mustapha can show sincerity in tackling corruption and help restore people's faith in those agencies.

It seems odd that such a huge cash withdrawal happened without immediate charges back then.

I'm not convinced we have enough proof linking Buhari directly to that withdrawal as fraud.

Investigators should release full transaction records and witness statements so citizens can follow the process step by step.
