Niger State Governor Replaces Fulani Ardos with Nupe Chiefs to Boost Security
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has dismissed all Fulani district heads, known as Ardos. He has appointed local Nupe chiefs in their place to curb kidnapping, violence and land grabbing. The governor cited rising conflicts, destruction of farmlands and allegations that some Fulani leaders invited armed groups from outside. Roles such as Hakimi have been re-designated to strengthen indigenous authority and improve security across the state. This historic move ends centuries of Fulani dominance over indigenous communities and marks a major shift in the region’s traditional leadership structure.
