I’m 33 and Can’t Stop Sucking My Thumb – Seeking Tips to Quit

I’m 33 and Can’t Stop Sucking My Thumb – Seeking Tips to Quit — 1 of 3
1 / 3

I recently admitted on Facebook that I still suck my thumb at 33. My dentist urged me to get braces, but I refused because braces would stop me from doing the one thing that calms me down when I’m upset and even helps me sleep. My dad says he first noticed me thumb-sucking moments after I was born. As a child, I tried bitter leaves, ointments and punishments — nothing worked until I injured my thumb and couldn’t suck it for a while. Today I’ve mastered when and where I suck my thumb, but quitting completely feels impossible. The comfort it brings outweighs my worries about crooked teeth. Has anyone else struggled with thumb-sucking as an adult? How did you finally break the habit?

Consider stress balls or fidget tools that mimic the soothing effect without risking dental alignment.
