Woman Severely Burned as Gas Leak Explosion Hits Bille Community in Rivers
A woman, Joy Amos, was severely burned after an explosion linked to suspected gas seepage tore through her room in Bille, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State. The blast reportedly shattered windows, set part of the building ablaze and forced her to flee for help. CAPPA said it had warned authorities about gas bubbling and emissions in wells, homes, waterways and school grounds across the island community only weeks earlier. Residents also alleged that heat and bubbling sounds had been coming from beneath the floor before the incident. The group has called for an urgent investigation, emergency medical care for the victim, possible evacuation of residents and the suspension of oil and gas operations around Bille until independent experts determine the source of the emissions. It also urged authorities to provide safe water, compensation and livelihood support for affected households.
