Met Officers Disciplined After Sharing Graphic Photo of Deceased Resident in Offensive Group Chat
Two Metropolitan Police officers have received final written warnings after taking and sharing images of a deceased resident on personal phones. A misconduct hearing revealed that PC Zak Malik and PC Billy Manning photographed a decomposing body in Dalston in 2021 and circulated it in a WhatsApp chat. Investigators uncovered a group named “Away Days” filled with sexist, homophobic, ableist and transphobic messages. One officer showed the image during a training course, claiming “I’ve been to a bad one.” Another officer said he was unaware of any wrongdoing and blamed poor equipment and lack of issued phones. The hearing exposed confusing guidelines on using personal devices for investigations. In 2022, senior leaders banned personal phones for policing. After a public panel, PC Manning received a two-year final warning and PC Frankie Jordan a three-year final warning.
