ECOWAS Parliament Urges Urgent Action to Rescue Street Children

The ECOWAS Parliament adopted a resolution on May 14 in Abuja calling on member states to remove vulnerable children from the streets and protect them from exploitation. Lawmakers directed the ECOWAS Commission to develop a harmonised regional framework and expand data systems for child rights policy and accountability. The resolution urges states to fund domestic strategies, enforce child protection laws, and ensure street children have access to education, healthcare, birth registration, and justice. The motion follows committee recommendations made in Freetown last month. It highlights the need to tackle root causes—poverty, displacement, and family breakdown—through community support, psychosocial services, and public awareness. It also calls for stronger cross-border cooperation to combat trafficking and ensure safe repatriation protocols.
